Today marks 30 yrs since I met Glenn Weslander, a great mentor, father in the faith, and close friend. We met at santa Barbara Juvenile Hall where we first ministered together to the troubled youth of Santa Barbara County. For the next 22 yrs, I had the privilege of serving alongside of him.
Prior to meeting Glenn, while I was reading “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him…” 2 Peter 1:3-11, I remember struggling as a new believer with verse 6, where Peter talks about adding godliness in our life. I contemplated this question, “How can a person be godly?” God answered my question in prayer 22 years later.
Glenn taught me how to minister to a hurting generation of young people. He showed me, by his example, how to love everyone like Jesus does and to see them exactly how the Lord sees them. Glenn taught me to pray to the Lord to see people through the eyes of Christ and to feel what Jesus Christ feels when He looks at someone.
Glenn taught me, by his example, how important the Word of God is and that the Word of God can transform us. I watched as he sacrificially purchased cases of Bibles so that we can give away to the young people who were locked up. He taught me how vital it is to leave the Word of God with the young people so they can read it and see for themselves how much Jesus Christ can and will heal, deliver, and set them free.
During the final days of Glenn’s life on this earth, I spent time with him on my lunch hour. Afterward, when I was back at work fixing a machine, I felt God’s presence very strong and I heard His voice speaking to my heart. He said, “Now do you understand how a person can be godly?” My mind rushed back 22 years ago to my conversation with the Lord. The Lord said to me, “ You were struggling with how a person can be godly so I sent Glenn Weslander to you.” I was instantly overwhelmed by God’s love and I wept and I thanked the Lord for giving me the greatest example of a godly and humble man, in Glenn. I will forever cherish Glenn Weslander in my heart and I long for the day when I will see his smile and excitement for the Lord, as he escorts me around the Kingdom of Heaven.
Thank You, Father, for the honor and privilege to be mentored by Glenn Weslander. I pray that I can impart into the next generation all that I gleaned from the man of God, in example and word, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
